The Tiger’s genesis began back in 1962 when Jack Brabham suggested a V8-powered Alpine to Rootes competition manager Norman Garrad, who in turn mentioned it to his son Ian - the firm’s West Coast sales manager in the USA. Before long, Garrad Jnr had enlisted chicken farmer, Le Mans winner and father of the AC Cobra, Carroll Shelby to engineer a prototype with a budget of $10,000. Meanwhile, a second example was completed before the first by former Shelby race engineer Ken Miles at his workshop on Cahuenga Boulevard, Hollywood, his budget was $800!
“Ken and I took it for a test drive,” recounted Ian Garrad in 1980. “I must admit to furtively looking for a change of underwear when we hit the fast lane, but within five minutes I knew that we had a winner.”
And a winner it was, with twice the power and three times the torque of the original Alpine, it was perfect for the USA market and enjoyed great success, even featuring in the TV show ‘Get Smart’.
But after only three years and a production run of just over 7,000 examples, Tiger production came to a halt in 1967 when Chrysler took over the Rootes group and decided that a Ford powered Sunbeam, no matter how good, was against their corporate ethos. What a shame, and in retrospect a huge mistake by Chrysler to end what should have been one of their greatest cars. It does, however, leave us with an exceptionally rare motor car. Many have, and are, being raced; many have been modified and sport larger than standard engines; and a fair few have met a sticky end.
So what we have here is a near standard example that has been beautifully restored at considerable cost and with great attention to detail. The only visible differences are the bespoke 15” alloy wheels, and the sensible addition of an aluminium radiator, everything else is as per factory specification.
You must see for yourself just how nice this Tiger is; there is also a large collection of invoices and photographs to peruse in the history file. We seriously consider that this is one of the best, and doubt you will disagree.
The standard radiator and fan shroud are available.
