Now this could be a very rewarding project! This 1978 Volkswagen Beetle Last Edition is one of just 300 produced, with this particular example proudly retaining its all-important original factory Last Edition plaque, confirming it as number 288 of 300.

The story behind it is rather poignant. Its late owner purchased the Beetle way back in 1981, making this an example that had been part of his life for well over 40 years. In 2015, he decided the time had come to give his cherished Beetle the full restoration it deserved.

It was subsequently entrusted to specialists, with the body and paintwork professionally attended to and the interior intended to receive similar treatment. Unfortunately, the original restoration company went into administration part-way through the process, leaving the Beetle securely locked away by the administrators.

Sadly, when access was eventually regained, the original seats and headlining had mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again.

Another restoration firm was approached to finish the project and further work was done on the suspension and chassis but the owner of the firm then retired leaving the Beetle unfinished. It has remained garaged since its return to the vendor's family.

Today, the Beetle is offered as a rolling chassis restoration project. The body has undergone a professional respray in a period-correct silver hue and presents as an excellent starting point from which its next custodian can continue the restoration.

A quantity of accompanying parts are included. The vendor’s family are as confident as can be that the remaining serviceable components are still present; however, given the circumstances surrounding the interrupted restoration, we cannot guarantee that every part required to complete is included. Likewise, the engine was running and driving prior to commencement of the restoration (and turns as per short video). Prospective purchasers should therefore satisfy themselves as to the contents and completeness of the project prior to bidding.

Most importantly, the Beetle retains that original Last Edition plaque - No. 288 of 300 - giving the finished article provenance that simply cannot be recreated.

A genuine Last Edition Beetle, owned by the same enthusiast since 1981 and already well on its way to being restored. Finish the job and put No. 288 back on the road where it belongs!
