A firm favourite in the classic Ford world, the 1600E is one of the most sought after saloons of the 1970s. A time when Ford were ticking all the right boxes, the Escort was the country’s most popular car and everyone wanted the new Capri.
The Cortina1600E was the young executive’s car of choice, fitted with the high-performance version of the 1600cc cross flow engine with a higher compression ratio so producing 93bhp at 5400rpm, as fitted to the GT. This gives a top speed of 96mph and 0-60 in 11.8 seconds. The 1600E further enjoyed lowered Lotus suspension and extra sound deadening for a sporting yet refined driving experience. As Ford themselves said “enough performance and polish to satisfy the most extroverted executive”.
Our Anchor Blue example looks very smart, with its black vinyl roof, twin spotlights, red pinstripe and chrome Rostyle wheels, the epitome of 70s cool. Considering its restoration was undertaken some 17 years ago, the paintwork has lasted well with only the odd minor marks and a little micro blistering on the boot. Inside, the black vinyl seats are in very good order; we presume they have been re-covered sometime in the past. The wooden dashboard is in good shape and all is finished off with the lovely three spoke alloy steering wheel.
Take a closer look around this rare 1600E, we think you’ll like it!
